Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. HFH seeks to eliminate poverty housing and hopelessness from the world, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat invites people from all walks of life to work together in partnership to help build houses with families in need. Habitat has built or rehabilitated more than 60,000 houses around the world, providing more than 300,000 people with safe, decent, affordable shelter.
Through volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) families. Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit, and financed with affordable, no-interest loans. The homeowners’ small monthly mortgage payments, between $125 and $250, are paid over 20 years and go into a revolving Fund for Humanity to help support the construction of more houses.
Habitat is not a giveaway program. Each homeowner family is required to invest 400 “sweat equity” hours into the construction of their home and other Habitat homes. Habitat homes are built through the use of tax-deductible donations of money and materials, and hundreds of hours of volunteer labor.
