Commission votes this week on base closings
WASHINGTON Alabama officials have
worked the past few months to make the state's military installations
stand out among those around the country.
Starting tomorrow, they'll learn whether
their work has paid off.The
Base Closing and Realignment Commission votes on the closing or scaling
down of 62 major military bases and hundreds of smaller bases. The
votes will come in hearings scheduled for tomorrow through Saturday,
which will be aired live on C-SPAN Two.The commission's recommendations
must go to President Bush by September eighth.In
Montgomery, a computer systems management at Maxwell-Gunter Air Force
Base could be moved to a base near Boston. If approved, Maxwell would
lose more than 12-hundred jobs -- 740 military and 511
civilian.Governor
Bob Riley and others have also tried to persuade the panel to reverse a
proposal to move nine aerial tanker aircraft assigned to the 117th Air
Refueling Wing, based at the Birmingham International Airport.Under the
BRAC plan -- Fort Rucker, Anniston Army Depot and Redstone Arsenal will
each gain more than one-thousand jobs.
