Movie Title: Jumper Category: Science Fiction / Action Year: 2008 Starring: Hayden Christensen, Samuel L. Jackson Rating: PG-13 – Sequences of intense action violence, some language, and brief sexuality DVD: Yes
Synopsis: Imagine you can go anywhere in the world in a matter of minutes, where would you go? Jumper is the story of David Rice (Hayden Christensen), a young man who discovers he has the ability to instantly transport himself to anywhere. Conflicts arise as a religious group called Paladins try to stop all Jumpers with different weapons and techniques.
Jumper is an excellent science fiction movie. Even though the jumping isn’t a new concept as it can be seen in such movies as The Covenant and with X-Men’s Nightcrawler, what makes this movie unique are the conflict between the Jumpers and their enemy, the alternate history, and how David deals with his ability and his life. The movie has great visual effects for the jumping sequences and entertaining action sequences. There are several messages that viewers can see through watching Jumper.
The movie is based on Stephen Gould’s science fiction novel Jumper published in 1992. The movie takes a new direction from the book in David’s adult life and the struggle between the Jumpers and the Paladins.
Jumper is a two sided DVD. Both sides of the disc have the movie, the movie commentary with director Doug Liman, writer/producer Simon Kinberg, and producer Lucas Foster and trailers of an FX promo and a sneak peek of season 7 of FX’s “24”. The differing features a video of how the novel moved to film on one side and on the other side are a video that shows the visual effects of jumping and a video of future concepts made in computer graphics. I give it a four out of five for an interesting storyline with great visual effects and excellent character development. Check it out sometime.
